Summary

What is the best argument for impeachment? Did violation of the Office of Tenure Act constitute grounds for the impeachment of President Johnson? What is the best argument against impeachment? Can you cite constitutional language why impeachment wasn't the proper action taken by the Radicals Republicans?

Students will learn that Congress wasn't successful in attempting to overtake the presidency. Impeachment couldn't be used to dismiss a president over issues that were not constitutional. Students will also see grounds established that will lead to segregation of the African Americans.
